Activities & Events

1) Sunderland Disability Swim Session

There is an exclusive use disability swim session on Saturday 28 June 2014 from 3.45-4.45pm, at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre for disabled children and their families.

The cost is £2.20 per person or family ticket £5.25 (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people).

2) Foundation of Light Skills Session

This session will take place prior to the Sunderland Ladies home fixture against Yeovil on Saturday 28 June 2014 at the Hetton Centre, Welfare Road, Hetton le Hole, DH5 9NE.  The session will begin at 9.30am with a cost of £3 per young person (includes admission to SAFC Ladies fixture v Yeovil) and is for children aged 5 to 11 years old

3) Alan Shearer Centre Summer of Fun

From animal encounters to pirates and princesses, soccer celebrations to stars and stripes, there is something to entertain everyone this summer at the Alan Shearer Centre.

The Scales ‘n’ Tails travelling zoo is back by popular demand on Saturday 28 June 2014 from 12.00-1.00pm, when visitors will have the chance to see, and even hold, creatures including huge insects, friendly reptiles and furry mammals.

In July they will be celebrating American Independence Day on Friday 4 July 2014 with some US-themed meals in Browne’s Café followed by a very British event on Saturday 5 July 2014 when the Wimbledon championships will be marked with their own mini tournaments and tennis-inspired activities.

With major summer sporting events in mind, the Alan Shearer Centre will have a World Cup wind-up week with organised games and pursuits with a football feel from Monday 7 to Friday 11 July 2014.

A magical Pirates and Princesses party is taking place on Saturday 26 July 2014. Hoist the jolly roger or put on your tiara and head down to the centre for a fancy dress disco in the marquee with games and a buffet from 12.00-2.00pm. and they are rounding off the month with Junior Jhoom, a Bollywood style dance and movement session for children will take place in the marquee on Monday 28 July 2014 between 1.00-2.00pm

4) Dyslexia North East Film Screening

A showing of the film Big Picture “Re-thinking Dyslexia” is taking place on Sunday 29 June 2014 at 3.00pm at Jam Jar Whitley Bay (Parking at Supermarket Car park opposite on Park Avenue Whitley Bay, North Tyneside).

A discussion will follow the documentary screening.  Cost to attend is £5 for adults and £3 for children – pay at the door.

5) Reminder – The Local Offer in Newcastle workshop

Northeast Special Needs Network invites parent/carers from Newcastle to this workshop taking place on Thursday 3 July 2014 from 12.30–2.30pm at Westgate Community College, West Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE4 9LU

The Local Offer will provide information for children and young people with SEN and disabilities, their parents and carers in a single place. It will include information on what services children, young people and their families can expect from a range of local agencies including education, health and social care.

Come and see where Newcastle is up to with its Local Offer and how to use the Local Offer to find out about suitable services for your family.

6) Dimensions Autism Friendly Screenings in July

The July screenings will be:

How to Train Your Dragon 2 on Sunday 6 July 2014 at Cineworld cinemas in Boldon and Middlesbrough at 11.00am and ODEON cinemas in Darlington, Gateshead Metrocentre and Silverlink North Tyneside at 11.30am

How to Train Your Dragon 2 on Sunday 13 July 2014 at the Showcase Teesside cinema at 10.00am

Frozen on Sunday 27 July 2014 at Vue cinemas in Gateshead, Cramlington and Hartlepool at 10.00am

7) Stockton United For Change (SUFC) Information Day

SUFC the recognised Parent Participation Forum for Stockton are hosting a Disability Information Day for parent/carers of children and young people aged 0-25 years and professionals working with them, bringing education/health/social care/private and voluntary sector agencies together.

This event will take place on Tuesday 15 July 2014 from 10.30am till 2.30pm in the activity hall at SPLASH, Church Road, Stockton TS18 1TY.

8) Sport Works Holiday Playchemes

For Stockton Families these will be running on Monday 28 July, Monday 4 August, Monday 11 August, Monday 18 August and Monday 25 August 2014

These sessions are designed for the following age groups: 3 to 7 years, 8 to 12 years and 13 to 17 years. All sessions will take place at Elm Tree Community Centre, Stockton-on-Tees from 10.00am–3.00pm at a cost of £3 per child. Activities will include sports games and activities, arts and crafts, cookery, computer research and more.

For Redcar and Cleveland Families they will be running on Thursday 24 July, Tuesday 29 July , Thursday 31 July, Tuesday 5 August, Thursday 7 August, Tuesday 12 August, Thursday 14 August, Tuesday 19 August, Thursday 21 August, Tuesday 26 August 2014 and Thursday 28 August 2014.

All sessions will take place at Eston Sports Academy, Redcar from 9.30am–3.30pm at a cost of £3 per child. Activities will include sports games and activities.

9) Headway Arts Workshops

Into the Unknown will give people the chance to try out fresh ideas & experience new situations. The workshops are open to people with learning disabilities aged 16+

Through creative arts workshops people will explore life skills to help them move forwards and make transitions – whilst having lots of fun along the way. Sessions will take place at Headway ArtSpace, Blyth, Northumberland during the week of Monday 11 August 2014 and will cost £20 per day (or £60 for all 4 days if booked in advance.)  Workshops run from 10.00am-3.00pm each day

Monday 11 August – movement & dance

Tuesday 12 August – visual art & music

Wednesday 13 August – drama & role play

Thursday 14 August – drama & stagecraft

10) The Gateway’s Fully Accessible Music Festival

The Gateway is a newly built integrated support, rehabilitation and housing pathway facility located in the Middlehaven area of Middlesbrough, right next to Middlesbrough College.

Middlehaven Festival is a fully accessible open-air Music Festival being held at Dockside in Middlehaven on Saturday 23 August 2014 from 11.30am and acts will begin at 12pm.  The Line Up includes a number of bands and the headline act is The Feeling

Tickets are £12 for the general public, £10 for under 18 year olds, £35 for family tickets (2 adults, 2 children) and two-for-one for those with disabilities and their carers.

Middlehaven Festival will be accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Features include Dedicated disabled parking; Personal assistants for disabled attendees get in free; Accessible toilets; Dedicated marquee for rest and relaxation and Medical services in a prominent location

1) DISC Furniture Scheme

In need of affordable furniture? DISC social enterprise have something for everyone.  The scheme is based in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham and supports people across the North of England to live independently and help them furnish their houses at a reasonable cost.

They have a range of good quality refurbished household items and furniture which are all available at an affordable price. People on certain benefits are also entitled to discount.
