The following courses are free to South Tyneside residents aged 19 as of 31st August 2015 who are in receipt of an eligible benefit, e.g. JSA/ESA. Courses will be held in our training room in our fully accessible premises in South Shields town centre. All course materials, resources, accreditation and certificate costs (if applicable), refreshments etc. are provided and we will also reimburse travel costs for the people to attend the courses. Our tutors are fully qualified and DBS checked.
Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace

A 2 day accredited course to increase your understanding of the principles of Health and Safety in the Workplace. You will gain knowledge of risk assessments, the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees, how to identify and control hazards, personal protective equipment, fire safety & first aid at work requirements and an overview of manual handling and safe working procedures.
Introduction to Volunteering 3 hour Workshops
Dates and times: 18th April & 19th April from 1.00- 4.00 pm
An interactive workshop to develop a basic knowledge and understanding of volunteering and the voluntary sector. You will identify your own skills and qualities which are transferable to the sector and also identify any areas for development. An overview of the Level 1 accredited Volunteering course will also be included and the opportunity to register for a place on the course will be offered to you as a progression.
Level 1 Certificate – Volunteering
Dates and times: 2 days per week, Monday & Tuesday from 9.00pm – 4.30pm
From 25th April – 20th June
An accredited course to develop your skills and knowledge of the voluntary sector. You will cover alternatives to paid work, what working as a volunteer means, the importance of effective communication/teamwork and building working relationships with customers/clients. You will also learn how to the workplace and personal presentation for the workplace
Introduction to the Retail Sector Workshops
Dates and times: Monday 11th April 1.15pm – 4.15pm
Tuesday 19th April 9.15am – 12.15 pm
A 3 hour workshop to gain an insight into the retail sector and understand more about the changing face of retail and the sector as a whole. You will find out what roles and job opportunities there are in the sector and gain an overview of the merchandising process. Progression opportunities onto further training, including a 4 day Ready for Retail course, will be explored.
Moving on Up Course
Dates and times: Wednesday 22nd April 9.30 am – 12.30pm
An 8 week, non- accredited course designed to increase confidence and self esteem, enhance your skills to deal with problems, improve communication and relationships. Use your skills to manage emotions and stress, increase self-awareness and move towards being job ready. This is an ideal first course to build upon your skills and open up possible progression opportunities into employment, volunteering or further learning.
